ACCESSIBILITY

we value

At Beluga Animation, we're all about making animations for everyone, and this means making our website and videos easy for anyone to access. Accessibility is a core focus, and we are committed to following the latest Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG 2.2) to make sure everyone, no matter their abilities, can get the most out of what we create.

We are always looking for ways to maintain accessibility, including the use of closed captions and audio descriptions on our latest content, and ensuring that navigating our website is a breeze with features like 'alt text' on images and optimised focus for 'tabindex' scrolling, making it easy for screen readers.

We understand that we need to keep working and improving in this area, and so we make sure to keep up to date by reading about the latest a11y (accessibility) information and regularly taking new courses.

Below you can see some of the courses we have been diving into lately.

CASE STUDY:

the patients association

  • The Patients Association is a UK charity that promotes patient-centred care, and provides support and information to individuals navigating the healthcare system.

However, they faced challenges with their patient communication, and needed to find a more effective and cost-efficient solution.

  • Familiarisation:
We took the time to fully understand The Patients Association, their aims, ambitions, and the challenges they faced.

The first point of communication they needed help with was letting certain patients know that a new medicine was available, and that changing to this new medicine could save the NHS millions of pounds.

However, some of the information surrounding the topic was complex and needed to be communicated in ways that everyone could access and understand.

    Scriptwriting:
We carefully crafted the message, making sure it was very clear what the new medicine was, how switching medicines could save the NHS money, and of course highlighting that it was up to each patient whether they switched.

    Storyboard:
We thought creatively about what visuals needed to be on screen to complement each line of the script and enhance the message, for maximum communication and understanding.

    Visual Design:
We created bespoke, visually captivating illustrations based on The Patients Association’s branding and personality, but also accommodating for accessibility needs by adhering to Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG 2.1) AA standard.

    Animation & Voice:
We brought the whole thing to life, ensuring the pacing of the video allowed for maximum understanding whilst also maintaining people’s attention. We used a very clear, friendly and professional voice for the narration, and included subtitles/captions for further accessibility.

  • This first animation we produced for The Patients Association delivered exceptional outcomes:

    Improved Visibility:
The animation elevated the new medicines’ visibility, capturing the attention of patients who may have otherwise missed it.

    Increased Engagement:
The captivating animation kept the audience engaged, resulting in higher viewer retention and increased interest in the new medicine.

    Simplified Communication:
By distilling the complex concepts into an easy-to-understand format, the animation maximised the communication of the message, helping people understand the benefits of switching medicines.

    Value for Money:
Switching patients to the new medicine had the potential to save the NHS millions of pounds. So, by enhancing visibility and communication in this way, The Patients Association maximised the return on investment for the NHS.

Additionally, once an animation is complete, it can be sent out to an unlimited number of people. This increase in reach and engagement leads to significant savings when compared with letters, phone calls and emails.

    Relationship:
Given the success of this project, we have been partnered with The Patients Association since 2018, producing several animations, leaflets, infographics and patient feedback videos.

"The team at Beluga are amazing. Their ability to communicate complex healthcare ideas to patients through explainer animations is second to none. I was particularly impressed with their astute attention to detail. Their work is simply fantastic and has added so much value to our organisation.”
